Herzelia Coastline Master Plan
2002 (competition, 1st prize)
The seashore and its kurkar (limestone) cliffs form the most beautiful and valuable natural resource of the city. Building along the cliffs , parallel to the coast line severely harms this landscape feature and blocks the access to the sea. Hence this proposal to develop a promenade, a passage to the sea, that crosses through the city and the cliff, perpendicular to the sea, leading down to the shore. Opening the view and allowing movement to the sea reinforces its presence and accessibility throughout the city. The project proposed a series of new public spaces in the form of a wide pedestrian walk that extends existing urban boulevards. Accompanied on both its sides by cultural and commercial programs, this urban space is shaped by a series of walls and ramps that connect between different levels and buildings and also serve to retain the higher ground and stabilize the kurkar cliffs.
